The Grand Duke of Tuscany graciously bestowed upon Marquis Ginori the fiefdom comprising the castles of the Val di Cecina, adjoining the estates of the Gherardesca, under the condition of reclaming the marshlands on the estuary of the river at the northern boundary of the Tuscan Maremma.

Building canals, diverting torrents, draining ponds, required many hands in need of salubrious living quarters, in this land of festering malaria. The Marquis located just the right place on the wooded slopes of the hills overlooking the sea and there he build two large houses which command the sweeping view of the beautiful coastal plain from Castiglioncello,depicted by the Macchiaioli School in their paintings, to the Etruscan Populonia, to the islands of Elba, Capraia, Gorgona and still beyond the Corsica, barely outlined on the horizon.

A great deal of material was needed to build houses, shore up ditches, construct locks that would regulate the flow of the river and torrents: wood for the brick furnaces, earthenware tiles for roofs, tiling, palisades and scaffolding. It was found near the houses build for the workmen. Trees were felled and land was reclaimed from the surrounding woods, on the top of the hillside and along the gentle slopes. When the work was finished, the workmen went away and were replaced by farmers who soon covered the land with vineyards, olive and wheat fiels. That place now is the Pakravan-Papi Estate.
